3K fartlek

Originally this was a 10K fartlek...but since I'm feeling "off" this week with a possible mystery illness relapse, it turned into a 3K fartlek. I could have done a 5K, but...

I woke not wanting to do anything. After all, I have neither the work ethic of Erin Taylor-Talcott nor the talent of Maria Michta, so why bother, right? Except...yeah...I need the exercise, both mentally and physically. And this morning I needed it more for my mental state. Don't know if it was the brooding clouds (at left) or continued rain or feeling blah about my relapse, but I was in a funk. And yes, I did feel a LOT better after working out. Does amazing stuff for depression.

Went to the gym (track! only track available!) and did ~1.5km of warm-up (5 laps) and then a little stretching. I almost didn't do the fartlek, because I thought I'd do 5K, and didn't feel mentally up to it, but then it occurred to me I could do a 3K fartlek. So I did, and I'm glad I did. It actually went well.

I did 10 laps: 2 fast, 2 med, 2 fast, 2 med, 2 fast, for 2920m. Times were 3:19.3, 3:35.7, 3:20.3, 3:39.6, 3:18.4 for 17:13.3 total, which when translated for the 500m efforts turns into 2:50.3, 3:04.3, 2:51.1, 3:07.6, 2:49.5 for 17:39.4. That's actually pretty good. I'm happy with it. Best of all, after 2 min my HR was down to 122, so I seem to be feeling fine. No weird soreness in the legs either. None,  at least as of now (1pm). Off to lab meeting...

And yes, when I got home, my dogs were doing this. It's a dog's life... :)

enforced rest day

Darn it.

After looking over my heart rate data from yesterday, my coach nixed my workout today. He said I could do light cross-training or rest. He's right. I'm not feeling great and pushing it does me no good.

I was very tired yesterday afternoon, and napped. And my legs were sore; a bit of the weird soreness.

Feeling sorry for myself last night, I ate a bunch of chocolate chip cookies. That wasn't a smart response...bummer. But now I can pick myself up and carry on. Eat well, rest well. It's a small relapse and I need to keep that in mind.

2K, 2x1500, 2x500

Yesterday: rest day. Legs felt well-recovered. I was very sleepy yesterday, though, and in general I have felt a bit fatigued this week. I think traveling, plus returning to work after a 4-day weekend, plus a few extra things on the docket this week have made me tired. But I'm noting it in case I have any trouble with the mystery illness.

Today (Memorial Day; photo at left with flag in our neighborhood; the Boy Scouts will put a flag in your yard on holidays, for a fee - interesting cultural tidbit for international readers): 2K, 2x1500, 2x500. The track is still not an option, so 800 East will have to do. It's straight, has relatively little traffic early in the morning, and is sort of flat. Sort of. Good enough I guess. I warmed up with ~1650m easy with strides, on a slight downhill, in 10:24 for 6:17/km. My legs felt good. I did some dynamic stretches and got going. The weather was pretty nice to start; 12.2C or 54F and overcast and calm, but pretty soon it started raining. It's been raining A LOT lately. Like every day, which for here is really weird even though May is one of our wettest months. It's still a desert, so the daily rain is unusual. At least it wasn't raining hard this morning - at worst it was a gentle rain, and mostly it was just drizzling.

I felt like I took it pretty easy on the first 2K; pushing comfortably hard to pace myself for what was to come, but in hindsight maybe it was too fast? I did well, doing the 2K in 11:33.8. But my heart rate didn't recover well, and that continued throughout the workout. By the last interval it didn't drop below 130, which is really unusual for me. Generally it gets down to 115-120 even in a hard interval workout. I am wondering what's going on and if it is significant? I will have to ask Jim, because it does have me a bit concerned. Anyway, after the fast 2K the rest of the workout wasn't very fast, but I got it done. The first 1500m was on a slight uphill (after the slight downhill of the 2K), and it was 8:49.6 (slow). And then my legs were tired, so the slight downhill 1500m that came next was also not fast at 8:50.0. I picked it up a little for the first 500m (slight downhill) at 2:52.9, but then on the last 500m (slight uphill) I could only manage 2:54.9. Edited to add: 35:01.2 for the 6K. Not terrible, but not very good either. Not as good as when I did this workout a couple weeks ago, but it's going to take some time to improve. After a long layoff like I've had, I have to be patient.

Today I was thinking about Perth (WMA 2016) and wondering if I really want to go if I don't improve my speed much. Is it worth it to go i
f I know I'm unlikely to m
edal? I think the answer is still yes, because of the opportunity to travel with Loren and also because I want to see my friends! I really want to see Nyle and David again, and I know I'd enjoy the vacation. I have to keep considering it though. I don't know what my body is going to do, and it may not continue to improve much; it's unpredictable.

After my workout I had breakfast with Kelly, her fiancé Chris, and Loren and the kids, which was wonderful. We ate at a perennial favorite, the Dodo, and enjoyed the food and the company a lot. That was my reward for a workout well-done, even if it wasn't fast.

10K and feeling fine

Whew. I'm feeling fine after my 10K this morning. I was quite nervous yesterday because I really thought I had some of the weird soreness all day, and I was very fatigued when I got home from work. I napped from 5-7pm before we went to the symphony, which is quite uncharacteristic of me. But it seems to have helped, because the 10K went smoothly this morning.

Nice weather, same as yesterday, 11.1C (52F). It's been cool and rainy which is getting a bit old, but frankly, we need the water so I'm not complaining.

I took BOTH dogs with me this morning (at left; Powder and Sugar, who wouldn't sit still for the photo!). It was the first time I took both of them, and it was interesting. Powder is a work in progress. She was pulling a lot, and kept running in front of me at first. She got a lot better, but then at about 6km she got tired and pretty much refused to move. After a brief rest I got her going again and walked them back home. I left them home and still had 2.2km to go, so I went out alone and was much faster w/o them :). I think in a few weeks it'll be a lot easier, so it's just going to be annoying for a bit until I get her fully trained. She was pretty good about not chasing other dogs, cats, etc., though she was clearly interested in them and was ready to do so if I let up.

As for me, my legs felt fine, and I did the 10K quite easily, which honestly surprised me. I was expecting it to be a death march. Go figure! I'm happy that it went fine. Total time: 1:04:18 for 6:26/km with ave HR about 150.

5x1km

Yesterday: elliptical; got up late so only 25 min :/ but I guess that's better than nothing.

Today: 5x1km. Weather: lovely for training, at 11.1C (52F) and overcast. Perfect for shorts and T-shirt. I did a 1.5km warm-up, throwing in a few strides along the way, in a quick 9:31 (slight downhill at the end). I SO wish that the track was open...I miss it...but 800 East works OK in a pinch. It's not flat, but the inclines are slight. Slight and noticeable to a racewalker. Oh well!

Starting off on the intervals it was a slight downhill for the first km, then slight up for 500m and flat 500m. The third km was flat then slight downhill, and the 4th km slight uphill. For the 5th I did the slight downhill. You can tell from the times!!! My legs got pretty tired by the 3rd km, and then the 4th and 5th were tough going. My heart rate was unusually high today, both on the intervals and on the recoveries. On the last recovery it was only down to about 126; usually it's at least below 120 by 2 minutes. During the intervals it was in the mid 170s by the end of the 3rd-5th intervals, and it maxed out at 177 (! my max is supposedly 191!).

My legs felt OK, except that they tired fast. I did have possibly a slight (very slight) bit of the weird soreness this morning. I'm not 100% sure but am writing it down just as data.

Times: 5:36.8, 5:42.0, 5:42.4, 5:57.1 (uphill, slightly; tired), 5:45.3 (downhill, slightly, tired). Total 28:44 for the 5K. I'm still slow compared to what I used to be pre-illness, but I am improving slowly. I'm not sure I'll ever be as fast as I was pre-illness, but I just don't know what might happen. I will expect improvement and train for it and hope for the best.

Side note: weight this morning was 157.8. I have lost about 6 pounds since January :). I've been working hard. This week I gained one back (lazy eating), as it had been 7. 8K

Monday & Tuesday - rest days. Monday: travelled ALL DAY LONG. Nice to hang with the girls, but not so nice to be in the car all day. Tuesday: I meant to cross-train yesterday, but I had SO much stuff to do when I got home that I needed the extra time in the morning. I had a little delayed onset muscle soreness after the race but it was very, very minor, and just in my legs.

Today: 8K. The weather was lovely at 52F (11C) and overcast. We adopted a new dog but she is not ready for racewalking with me yet - needs more training - so I just took Sugar with me. Our new dog, Powder, is at right in the photo here. They look SO much alike :).

My legs felt a bit off when I started - right shin a bit sore, and just some general malaise - but after 1km or so they felt fine, just a little heavy. That continued all the way through the workout. I'm pleased that all I had was some slight heaviness, as it shows I'm recovering better than I have been.

Total time 50:55 for 8km for 6:22/km with ave HR 144. Garmin data here.

15K nationals in Riverside, CA

This went about as I expected. Not great, but not terrible. And I did better than the last two years; while that isn't saying much since I was super slow those two years, it reflects how I am feeling in a nutshell. BETTER! Better is good. I think what truly sums up my day today is what Yvette, another racewalker, said as I lapped her: "It's a beautiful day. We are blessed to be out here." Amen, sister.

I wanted to do a 6:10/km pace, and I did that for the first partial lap and the second lap, but I knew that wasn't in the cards for today. I worked a bit too hard to get to 5K in 30:50, then 10K in 1:02:17 (31:27), and my laps slowed down from 10:31 to 10:53 at the slowest (2nd to last lap). I had a little left in the tank for the last lap, though my HR was up into the low 170s to get a 10:38 at the end. Disappointing but not surprising, though again I am truly very happy just to be feeling better and on my way back. Total time was 1:33:49 with last 5K of 31:32, so I held on to my pace pretty well from 5-15K. Average HR 162; working hard but still out of shape. Max was 176 at the end!

Laps were 8:07 (partial), 10:31, 10:39, 10:40, 10:44, 10:51, 10:47, 10:53, 10:38.

Garmin data here.

I am having a relaxing and fun weekend with my friends Nancy and Kathy, and it's super nice to be out of town and have few responsibilities for a few days. It's a great bonus to see friends at the 15K, and I especially enjoyed talking with Alex Price and with Dave Talcott and Erin Taylor-Talcott. Haven't had a good chat with Erin in a very long time, and I very much enjoyed catching up with her. Lucky for me, Dave and Erin are staying at the same hotel as we are, and we are all going to get to have dinner tonight :).

5K + 5x200

Nice weather this morning - 15C (60F) and overcast.

I felt good and recovered; yesterday my legs were tired so I took the day off. But today was better. I did a nice fast-ish 5K to see how race pace of 6:10/km would feel; it was moderate to moderately hard for 5K, so I'm not sure how Sunday's 15K will go, but ... well, it is what it is. I have trained as hard as my body would let me. The 5K was 31:15 with ave HR 150, and then I did 5x200m. The 200s were really good - I felt so fast! I do have some fast-twitch muscles left, apparently. I did them in 5:03 total for the 1km, which is the best I've done in a while, so I'm feeling good. My legs have felt great the rest of the day, so I'm recovering well. Tomorrow I'll rest or a gentle x-train, Saturday 15 min easy, Sunday RACE! :)

8K and feeling good :)

I am so relieved to be feeling good today. Last night I felt very energetic and was able to get a bunch of things done; usually after 8pm (especially the last couple of years) I am worthless, but last night was productive. And I woke up feeling good, and it's just SO NICE.

I was going to do my usual route around Liberty Park, but I am bored with it. Or something. I saw a runner go by my house and down the alley and I thought to myself that I could go the other way through the alley, through Westminster College, and over through Hidden Hollow to SugarHouse Park. A little hilly, but a lot less hilly than the route I used to take over there before they made the underpass under 1300 East. I'm liking it! I took a photo just as I was leaving the park. It was a gorgeous morning, 63F (!) and overcast and calm, and the mayor's bike to work day was today - they were meeting at the park, though I was there a little too early to see the mayor.

So, it was a little hilly and I was slow in places because of that, but I still did 6:28/km for 51:47 for the 8km. The total elevation gain and loss was 51 and 57m, respectively, according to my Garmin. Seeing as how I basically ended up at the same place I started I'm not sure about the 6m difference, other than that Garmin is not that accurate for elevation, which doesn't surprise me. Close enough. Nice hills, good workout, and feeling great afterward. I'll take it!

rest days, then 5K fartlek

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday: Rest days, though on Friday night I walked about 3-4km with my husband on our date night. Rather than taking the car, we ate at a restaurant close to home, and then walked around a bit on our way home. I slept Friday afternoon after leaving work early due to fatigue. I was very tired Saturday, though Sunday I did feel a bit better. It helped that it was Mother's Day and the kids and Loren and my dad actually spoiled me and my mom :).

Today: Jim said that if I felt good I should try a 5K fartlek. I woke feeling decent and warmed up by walking down the street to 800 East, which is relatively flat. Since the track is closed, this is my next best option. I felt good on the ~1500m walk over there, so I decided to go for it. Why not? I felt I really needed a confidence boost and that a good workout would make me feel more sure that 1) the mystery illness was not relapsing, and 2) that I would be feeling decent for Sunday's 15K, which I am admittedly a bit nervous about.

I got started and felt good, and on the slight downhill 1st km, did 2:48.4 + 2:51.3 for 5:39.7. Good start. Then there's a slight uphill (OK this whole course is pretty flat, but there are noticeable though very slight inclines and declines) and my medium effort 500 was a slowish 3:10.9. Then a decent 2:53.3 fast (flat/slight downhill), a slowish 3:13.3 (flat), and then a nice 2:51.4 on a slight downhill. Then it got harder - slight uphill for the next 1km, and on tired legs it yielded a 3:18.0 and then a 3:00.5 (slow!) but clearly the incline was a factor as my last km was 3:15.3 and then a nice fast 2:50.2 to finish. Total time was 30:11 and considering I've had 3 days off and that my legs felt shaky and Jell-O-like for the last 1.5 km, I'm quite happy with this. I worked VERY hard, as my HR on average was 164. I feel like I've shaken off the cobwebs and am going to be ready for Sunday - good confidence-boosting workout. I know it was kind of slow and that my recoveries weren't that good, but considering how I've been feeling I think it was a good effort and it shows that my legs will be OK.

I have had no weird soreness or anything like that this morning, and I did sit for an hour at the confocal microscope. Whew.

A photo with my rosebushes after the workout is above
:). I love roses!

13km...no, 10.5km...

Weather: lovely! It rained a lot last night and has been raining a lot this week (typical for May here) but this morning was cool and brisk and overcast then sunny. Perfect.

My legs: HORRID. Don't know why. All I did yesterday was 45 min elliptical, nothing else. No biking, no weights, no nothing. I have been very busy this week and am a little short on sleep but not bad. Yesterday was busier than usual: took car in to shop, worked, violin lessons (Grace), gave Calvin a piano lesson, had friends over for dinner. But nothing that stressful or anything.

Still...my legs were terrible today. Heavy, no energy, no life. Sloooooower than a turtle. Was to do 13K but stopped at 10.5K and total time was 1:10:32 for 6:43/km with ave HR 140. Ouch. I have no more to say except I had better recover from this ASAP. At left is how I felt while in Liberty Park this morning. Bleah!

During lab meeting this afternoon my legs were a bit restless and crampy-sore. Maybe a bit of the weird soreness? I'm not sure; if it was the weird soreness it wasn't bad. Ugh. I'd like to believe this was just an "off" day but I'm paranoid these days.

On the bright side, my neighbor down the street has beautiful irises!

3x1km; 4x500

Sunday: rest day, much needed.

Monday: elliptical, 45 min. Originally Jim was going to have me do speed work, but after my unspectacular 15k on Saturday he pulled back my schedule this week, for which I am grateful. I mean, I wish I could do what he'd originally put down, but my body is tired and I can feel the goodness of the rest. Yesterday I felt really good doing the elliptical and could tell it was what I needed.

Today: I literally stopped to smell the roses this morning. My red roses are blooming and were covered with raindrops and were so lovely, so I stopped to look at them and photograph them before I got in the car to go to the track. I was procrastinating a bit because I woke up feeling very tired; I need a bit more sleep when working out hard and I haven't done a good job at making sure I get it. But I was actually looking forward to my track workout because I got to do it on a real track. Josh, my boss, is a member of the Black Sheep running club and gets their e-mails about their workouts. Since the tracks are all closed, they have trouble finding workout locations too. Someone in their club has a connection up here at the U, though, and managed to get the track opened at 6 am this morning and got the bars over the first 3 lanes unlocked. Woohoo! Josh told me about this yesterday and I was really glad to know I could work out at the track. It just helps a lot with pacing, and it's nice to be outside when the weather is good like it was this morning. If I could order up weather for a track workout or a race, this morning would be it. Overcast and 13.9C (57F) with a slight breeze. Doesn't get any better than that!!!

I did my warm-up in lanes 3-4 because the runners were doing their speed work. By the time I finished my 1600m and did some stretching, they were doing their cool-down and I had lane 1 to myself :). YES! Amazing how the things we take for granted, like having a track to work out on, become so much more valuable when they are limited quantities.

My legs didn't feel very fast today, and it took a while for my system to get going. Not sure why that was, but the good thing was that once I got going it went well. I was slow on my first km at 2:53.4, 2:56.5 for 5:49.9. Ugh! But I reminded myself that I am grateful to be able to train, and that my legs feel strong and that there is no weird soreness. With that I started my second 1km, and tried to focus on feeling strong and having good technique. My left piriformis and/or glutes was really kind of irritated, though it did get better throughout the workout. I have got to do some strength training! Jim sent me some exercises and now there is really no excuse. Anyway, my 2nd 1km was better at 2:51.8, 2:55.1 for 5:46.9. And my third was even better at 2:51.2, 2:54.8 for 5:46.0. Still not really GOOD, but I was out there getting it done, and I was getting a good workout. The 500s were good though :). My first one was 2:47.4, second 2:47.8, third 2:45.5, and the fourth 2:44.5. HA! I knew there was some speed in those legs somewhere. It's not nearly as good as it used to be, but at least those 500s gave me a glimpse of what I used to do. It's encouraging anyway. At least I'm moving the right way.

15K and very tired

I knew when I got up that this one would be hard. My legs still felt tired from yesterday. No weird soreness, though, and for that much I'm very grateful. I have to keep it all in perspective.

It was warm this morning - 17.8C (64F) - but not hot, and I don't think the temperature was a problem. My dog drank a lot of water though! I have her carry a canvas bowl in a small pack around her neck, and fill it at the water fountain at Liberty Park.

I started off, and after 500m downhill in a slow 3:17 I thought "uh-oh", and when my next slight uphill 500m was 3:29, I thought "double uh-oh" but resolved to try hard and see what happened. My left piriformis was cranky to start like yesterday but felt better as I warmed up, and I did work hard on technique today until I got so tired I couldn't think. I did make it to 5K in a reasonable 32:30 (6:30/km) which is slow for me for just the first 5K with a slight downhill overall, but...it's been a hard week of training.

Around 9.4km Jim called me. I needed to talk to him, so that was fine. I was really tired; since 7.5km or so, my right shin had gotten tired and my foot was scuffing more. We talked for a little while and he said he knew it was a hard week but he'd put 18K on my schedule to see what would happen; he thought I was close to being able to handle it, and I agree that I am close...but not quite there yet. He said if I did 14-15km that'd be OK.

After we talked I kept going, and it was slow and a little plodding, and my right shin/front of ankle got pretty sore about 11.5km. I stretched and massaged it and then it was all right. Because I was so tired, I totally miscalculated my route (added 3 instead of 2...sheesh!) and ended up a bit far from home with only 2km to go. Oops. I racewalked home but ended up with a nice long ~750m cool-down.

Total for the 15K was a slow 1:39:30, for 6:38/km with ave HR 144. But I did do a 10K kickdown this week, 5x200s, and 6km of intervals, so it's not surprising I'm tired. My body isn't used to that amount of quality work. My total for the week is only about 52km but I don't think I'm used to that much either.

I can't say I'm happy with this workout, as it was a tough slog, but at least I got it mostly done. Busy day awaits. Violin recital for Grace, house cleaning, play dates for kids, and symphony tonight with Loren.

Photo of me with Sugar is just after the workout :).

~2K, ~2x1.5K, ~2x500m

Yesterday: 40 min elliptical

This morning was aggravating.

I went to East High track. When I arrived, I noticed that the construction had gotten more extensive and the normal entrance was blocked. About this time, a guy in a contractor pickup truck pulled up and said, "The track's closed until August". No notices had been displayed...nothing...no warning...just closed. I asked him some questions and found that they are replacing the grass with Astroturf. Oh yay. Score 1 for the football team, and 0 for track workouts.

So just for kicks (by this time I wouldn't have had time to do a workout there) I drove over to Highland High to see what their track was like. Guess what? It had the SAME problem. The entire field was torn up. REALLY?!??!? I can't catch a break.

Then I drove home in disgust, figuring at this point I'd have to be late to work and work out at the track at the University of Utah. The problem with that track is that lanes 1-3 are closed all the time unless the track team is using it, which is understandable but quite annoying. My tax dollars and some of my boss' grant money goes to the schools and the U, and so indirectly I'm paying something for these tracks. I'd like to be able to use them.

Once home, I figured out the calculations for lane 4, which is apparently 420m on a typical track. So to do my 2K, 2x1500, 2x500 workout I'd do approximately 4.75 laps for 2K, 3.5 laps for 1500, and 1.2 laps for 500. Approximately. Then I could work out the details on my spreadsheet (because that's not exact, but it would work for doing the workout).

When I arrived at the gym, my aggravation increased. The signs said 1) no hot water from May 9-22 (no showers! ugh! I use the showers there after I work out!), and 2) the BRAND NEW indoor track will be closed for repairs (repairs?!?!?! so soon!) from May 7-17. Crap. It's like the tracks of Salt Lake City are conspiring against me.

When I finally got to the track, I did a 4-lap warm-up in 10:46, including strides, and then some dynamic stretching. I started my workout and did the 4.75 laps in 11:43.3, which works out to 11:45.1 for 2km. My left piriformis and right shin/front of ankle started to nag but focusing hard on technique and posture kept the nagging from getting any worse, and in fact it seemed to feel a bit better the farther I went. 11:45 wasn't fast but there was a lot of workout left, so I was OK with it. Then the 1500s. The first one felt decent and I did 3.5 laps in 8:40.5, which works out to 8:51.1 for 1500. Not very good for feeling decent. It was getting warmer outside and I'm not used to it at all, and my legs were also getting tired, so the next one was slower at 8:44.5, which is 8:55.2 for 1500m (ugh...that's so slow). Then all I had left was the 500s, which I figured I could do OK. It's easy to see 400m on a track, even in lane 4, because they label the stagger. So I started at the staggered line and did 400m, and then guesstimated by time another ~100m. I think these might have been slightly short? Ugh. They were 2:51.8 and 2:50.9, for whatever that's worth - I don't think I was that fast...but I really don't know. The photo at left is at the end of my workout.

Doesn't matter, actually. We (my coach and I) know I'm not fast right now, and what really matters is the training. Somehow, someway, I have to believe that if I keep training that I'll improve and someday get back close to where I was when I left off. I'm only two years older, which is something, but it's not THAT much of a difference. I should be able to get close to where I was. It's hard to believe that right now, but I'm trying.

The temperature was 16.1C (61F) at the track when I started, apparently (Garmin website weather data). It felt a little warmer, but it was really sunny and the website says overcast. Whatever! Good thing I had plenty of sunscreen on even though it was only 9am. Gotta watch that skin. Don't need any more wrinkles or age spots!

I finally got to work at 10:20am. Geez. Good thing my hours are flexible. I have to come in tomorrow for a little bit so it's not like I'm feeling overly guilty about being a bit late. Last week my boss gave me some nice compliments (despite the fact that our project isn't going super smoothly - but that's research, and science in general, not really me) so I'm feeling OK about things at work.
